Optical magnetism and negative refraction in plasmonic metamaterials

چکیده
In this review we describe the challenges and opportunities for creating magnetically active metamaterials in the optical part of the spectrum. The emphasis is on the sub-wavelength periodic metamaterials whose unit cell is much smaller than the optical wavelength. The conceptual differences between microwave and optical metamaterials are demonstrated. We also describe several theoretical techniques used for calculating the effective parameters of plasmonic metamaterials: the effective dielectric permittivity eff(ω) and magnetic permeability μeff(ω). Several examples of negative permittivity and negative permeability plasmonic metamaterials are used to illustrate the theory. c © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Three-dimensional nanotransmission lines at optical frequencies: A recipe for broadband negative-refraction optical metamaterials
We apply the optical nanocircuit concepts to design and analyze in detail a three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nanotransmission line network that may act as a relatively broadband negative-refraction metamaterial at infrared and optical frequencies. After discussing the heuristic concepts in our theory, we show full-wave analytical results of the expected behavior of such materials, which show in...
متن کاملDynamical theory of artificial optical magnetism produced by rings of plasmonic nanoparticles
We present a detailed analytical theory for the plasmonic nanoring configuration first proposed by Alù et al. [Opt. Express 14, 1557 (2006)], which is shown to provide negative magnetic permeability and negative index of refraction at infrared and optical frequencies. We show analytically how the nanoring configuration may provide superior performance when compared to some other solutions for o...
متن کاملOptical Chirality Enhancement in Twisted Arrays of Plasmonic Nano-rods
An important property of electromagnetic fields, which arises from the interaction between fields and chiral molecules, is called optical chirality. By enhancing this field property, while maintaining constant input power, we are able to increase absorption of circularly polarized light by chiral molecules of a certain handedness. This enhancement is achieved through the use of achiral plasmoni...
متن کاملMetamaterials and Transformation Optics
Metamaterial is not a well-defined terminology. In fact, this terminology does not mean any specific material, but instead a new way of thinking. Usually this term means carefully engineered material structures composed of carefully designed inclusions that can exhibit unusual electromagnetic properties not inherent in the individual constituent components [1]. These properties include, for exa...
متن کاملTitanium nitride as a plasmonic material for visible and near-infrared wavelengths
The search for alternative plasmonic materials with improved optical properties, easier fabrication and integration capabilities over those of the traditional materials such as silver and gold could ultimately lead to real-life applications for plasmonics and metamaterials. In this work, we show that titanium nitride could perform as an alternative plasmonic material in the visible and near-inf...
